Dear Warren,
We’re still in the middle of vintage with fruit coming in daily to the winery - 2010 is shaping up to produce some exceptional wines. We’re also very proud to announce that this vintage marks Viv Thomson’s 50th consecutive vintage at Best’s; a remarkable achievement and why many consider Viv one of the living legends of the Australian wine industry.
The release of the 2007 Great Western Bin 0 Shiraz proved incredibly popular last month and we’re getting some great reviews. We’ve also released the much anticipated 2007 Sparkling Shiraz and have a special offer for our eNewsletter supporters this month. The last vintage sold out before Christmas and with limited production - we’re also expect this vintage to sell out fast.
It was lovely to see so many of our loyal supporters at the Melbourne Cellar Door at Southgate last month, thanks for stopping by! And if this is your first eNewsletter, we welcome you to the Best’s community and look forward to sharing more of our best-kept secrets with you. We hope you can join us at the upcoming end of vintage celebration at the winery on the 16th of May.
Cheers,

Viv Thomson celebrates his 50th Vintage at Best’s |
 |
This vintage marks the 50th consecutive vintage for Viv Thomson. So from all of us here at Best’s, we want to say congratulations to Viv - a remarkable achievement and one we doubt could be matched by many people in the Australian wine industry.
Viv, is a graduate of the acclaimed Roseworthy College and the fourth generation owner at Best’s and the winery owes its modern day reputation as a quality producer and its numerous accolades at wine shows and by critics alike to him. Viv has been recognised by the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival as a ‘legend’ for his services to the wine industry. He was also President of the Victorian Wine Industry Association for many years, being recognised with a Distinguished Service Award.
Viv, now semi retired, is known for his fine palate, his remarkable personal cellar (especially Burgundies) and for his many years of service as an Australian National Wine Show judge. He is considered the patriarch of Great Western, with an in-depth knowledge of the region and its vineyards.

Special Offer: Best’s Great Western Sparkling Shiraz 2007 |
 |
The 2006 Best’s Sparkling Shiraz sold out following the great reviews including being named the Winestar Sparkling Red Wine of the Year 2009.
Despite 2007 being a challenging vintage, we think that the 2007 Best’s Sparkling Shiraz is just as impressive as the 2006. A tough year with drought and frost seen in most cool climate areas meant that there were lower yields although the fruit produced was medium bodied with red fruits, spice and beautifully aromatic - a perfect combination for the production of Sparkling Shiraz. It is great to drink now, or to put down for future.

Best’s Great Western Bin 0 Shiraz 2007
“An outstanding vintage for Bin 0, this is a very pretty wine in an unashamedly elegant mould, laced together with black pepper, plum skin and wisps of lemon blossom. A wine of great presence and structured poise; it will be very long lived.”
95/100 - Tyson Stelzer - Wine 100 - March 2010

Best's Thomson Family Shiraz 2006
"An exemplary Great Western Shiraz whose pristine expression of small black and red berry fruit, tightly knot cedar/chocolate oak and dusty, spicy and peppery undertones simply ooze finesse and charm. More savoury and artful than its predecessors, this stylish and seamless wine has plumpness and juiciness, but finishes long and savoury, with lingering charcuterie-like complexity. It's medium to full in weight and should develop in the bottle for decades."
Jeremy Oliver, Best Buy Wines, Gourmet Traveller WINE, Feb/ March edition 2010.

Best's Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
"When Viv Thomson released his first Best's Cabernet Sauvignon from the 1982 vintage, it created quite a stir. At the time, can sav was a scarce commodity, an absurd notion with today's glut. This is no fruit bomb, it's morein the thoughtful, savoury mould. It's already showing a complex bouquet with warm, dark berry fruit, all spice and dried herbs and a touch of cedar. It's a wine of power and finesse with an energy that lifts it beyond its peers. Although perfectly drinkable now, further cellaring will see it at its best."
Peter Bourne, Best Buy Wines, Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE - February/ March 2010 Edition
